Tips to Stay Safe on the Roads this Holiday Season

The holidays are a fun time for family, friends, and festivities. However, they can also be stressful times, and there can be increased risks on the road between Thanksgiving and New Year’s.  The following are some tips to keep yourself safe on the California roads during the holidays, so a car accident does not disrupt your season. One step that everyone should take is to ensure they have the proper auto insurance coverage in the event an accident does occur.

Stay Safe While on the Clock

Not only are people on the roads to run errands and attend holiday events, but many people drive as part of their jobs during the holidays. Deliveries ramp up significantly, and anyone driving on the clock should ensure they follow all traffic laws and drive defensively. Companies and commercial drivers should always go into the holiday hustle with the best available commercial car or truck insurance coverage.

Watch Out for DUI Drivers

Whether you are driving for business or personal reasons, there is an increased risk of drunk or drug-impaired drivers on the roads. While you might be safe behind the wheel, intoxicated drivers can cause serious crashes when you least expect it. Drunk drivers can cause property damage, injuries, and other problems that will disrupt your holidays. Keep your eye out for anyone driving erratically, and steer clear of those vehicles.

Avoiding Driving While Tired

When you leave a holiday party or are traveling to visit family, you might be more tired than you realize. You should first avoid driving when you are drowsy or sleepy, as this greatly increases your chances of accidents. You might want to use rideshare services if you will be leaving a late-night gathering. If you are on a road trip, always stop to rest if you are becoming tired.  Also, be aware of others on the road when driving at night, as they might be overly tired and make mistakes that cause crashes. Some signs of drowsy drivers include veering out of a lane, failing to brake for obstacles and similar conduct.

Be Careful When in a Hurry or Last-Minute Shopping

There is no doubt the holidays can be hectic, and many of us try to juggle work, kids, gift-buying, and gatherings all at the same time. When you leave your house, you might have limited time and be in a hurry to complete your tasks, such as last-minute shopping for food and gifts. Everyone else on the road might also be in a hurry.  Hurried drivers often make mistakes and cause accidents, and these can happen on the road, in retail parking lots, and in other locations. Take your time and avoid aggressive driving or getting in the way of others speeding on the roads.
