COULD I BE PAYING LESS FOR MY HOMEOWNERS INSURANCE?

As soon as you have an offer accepted on a home, your next step should be shopping for homeowner’s insurance. Typically, home buyers can’t receive a mortgage without an insurance policy and you do have some leeway in terms of what insurance you go with. If you’re looking to save on your homeowner’s insurance there are a few things you can do to enjoy lower rates.

Homeowner’s insurance covers your home in the event the worst occurs. If your home is damaged in a fire, by a falling tree, or by a strong storm that rolls through, it’s your homeowner’s insurance policy that will be there to cover the damages and ensure your home can be restored once again. Your homeowner’s insurance policy can also cover lost property after a burglary or theft, and even put you in temporary accommodations while your home is being worked on after an incident occurs.

What To Keep In Mind If You Want To Save On Your Homeowner’s Insurance

There are a few things to keep in mind if you wish to save on your homeowner’s insurance coverage. Some of these considerations to make are:

1.    Choose your home wisely – There are a number of factors that go into the pricing of your homeowner’s insurance policy. For instance, if you’re purchasing an older home in an area far away from a local fire station, you may expect to pay more. It makes sense – a home that is older may have older wiring or it may be beginning to break down, and a lack of fire department nearby could mean that a fire cannot be contained before the home is a total loss. This presents greater risk for your insurance provider. Where your desired home is located, how old the home is, how many claims have been filed on the home, and the age of the plumbing and electrical systems.

2.    Choose a higher deductible – While somewhat risky, you may be able to save monthly on your homeowner’s insurance policy by opting for a higher deductible. This would mean paying more if you need to file a claim with your policy provider, but your monthly payments would be lower to compensate. It could be a reasonable option if a person lives in a newer home located in a safe suburban area that doesn’t tend to get extreme weather. In these cases, you’re less likely to need to file a claim and may save in the long run.

3.    Do some work on your home – If your home has an aging electrical system, plumbing, or roof, making these repairs may allow you to lower your homeowner’s insurance premiums. What this does is takes away risk for the insurance provider allowing you to be covered for less.
