Our cars are designed to handle some extreme temperature situations. However, we really do not think much about this until we leave something in our car that probably should not have been left there.
We also think that it is okay to leave certain items in our vehicles as long as we make sure to lock them up. That is not always the case, though. Here are 5 items you should never leave in your car, regardless of the weather or the fact that you locked it up.
Let’s start with the obvious. You should never leave your kids or pets in the vehicle. In hot weather, it takes just one hour for the inside of a vehicle to climb upward of 50 degrees, making the interior much hotter than it is outside. The same applies to cold conditions. Children and pets are susceptible to hypothermia.
You should also never leave any of your gadgets in the vehicle, either. These include your smartphone, laptop, tablet, and anything else that do not do well in extreme temperatures. When they are left in the car, they can also make your vehicle a prime target for a break-in, especially if you leave them where they can be seen from the outside.
In the same respect, you should also never keep valuable documents in the vehicle, such as the title to the vehicle or your passport.
Did you know that when sunscreen is left in the heat, its active ingredients can begin to break down, making the product less effective? The next time you reach for the sunscreen that has been sitting in your hot car, keep that in mind. Otherwise, you may wind up with sunburn.
Who does not have at least a couple of forgotten plastic water bottles in their vehicle? When those are left at high temperatures, the plastic’s chemicals can leach into the water. While many plastic bottles are now BPA-free, some types of plastic may contain potentially harmful chemicals.
This may sound like another obvious one, but a lot of people still end up leaving their car keys or spare inside their car. So while you may be tempted to keep the vehicle running if it is hot out while you run into the store or you want to warm up the car early, you should avoid doing those things. Leaving the keys in the car is not only dangerous but also an invitation for someone to easily jump in and take off with your vehicle.
